This is a figure developed by R. B. Rood to help model a knowledge system.  The main points

 

1) The knowledge system is NOT ONLY Science and Applications.  Therefore, this conveys the idea that there are other sources of knowledge.

2) Lines are NOT draw between the different items in the knowledge system because that suggests too direct and too permanent relationship.

3) Structured Problem Solving connects the knowledge elements to the applications ... this is defined more fully elsewhere.
