Freeze-thaw frequencies calculated by eight different counting methods were compared using daily maximum and minimum temperatures from eight north-central United States National Weather Service (NWS) stations.  The results of this study make it apparent that the estimation of freeze-thaw events in the soil are greatly overestimated when based on the daily maximum and minimum values measured in the temperature shelter.  The results indicate that a more appropriate temperature for the occurrence of freezing and thawing events in the soil at 1cm in a bare soil would be with a shelter minima and maxima limits set at about -3.5°C and about 6.3°C, respectively.
